Should my House be Rewired?

We’re Here for You!
May 17, 2020For the last couple of posts we have been covering electrical myths; things we all believe about electricity but aren’t actually true. This week we are talking about all those things you have plugged in around your house that are drawing energy even when the plugged in unit is turned off. That’s right. It’s called “phantom energy” and it is costing you money. All those phone chargers that you leave plugged in to the wall even when you don’t have your plugged into them. Additionally, your computer cord with the transformer (the little black box) suck power if they are left plugged into the wall. According to the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC) every household in America wastes about $165 per year because of phantom energy. If you would like to read more about it, follow this link.
There is something you can do in order to cut down on wasted energy use in your home but it involves a little work. When you aren’t using your computer’s charging cord, unplug it. And when you aren’t charging your phone, unplug the charger. One thing you can do to make it a little easier on yourself is to plug multiple electronics into a power strip and at the end of the day turn off and unplug the power strip. You could even purchase a “smart” power strip which will assist you in “remembering” to turn things off – there are several of these on that popular shopping website that begins with an “A.”
As usual, Peter Needham is just a phone call away if you need help with any of your electrical needs.
